Summer reading is back, and this year, we’re digging in.
Summer Reading runs June 29 through August 21. Pick up your reading tracker and bingo card at the library starting in late June. There’s a version for kids and one for adults and teens, so the whole family can join in. Read throughout the summer, explore, complete challenges, and see what you unearth. Turn in a completed tracker and/or bingo card for a chance to win a prize.
We have eight weeks of programs in the works, built around the theme of discovery, from dinosaurs and deep sea adventures to music and stories. More details coming soon.
Kick things off with us on Monday, June 29, 6 PM, with a free screening of The Water Horse.
This summer kids will unearth the past with a Dinosaur Replica build. Create a model T. Rex, excavate a favorite fossil, or piece together a footprint from the past. Join us on July 8th and August 12th for LEGO @ PPL!
Dig into Dinos this summer at our weekly Story Times for ages 0-6 every Thursday at 11 AM, and bi-weekly on Sundays.

In another Science by the Seat of Your Pants and STAR Net program at PPL, If/Then ambassador and earthquake geologist Dr. Wendy Bohon delivers a virtual talk, that will “Unearth a Story” about “Earth Shakers: The science of earthquakes.” Earthquakes: World Shakers with Dr. Wendy Bohon, July 15th.

ROUST Records Presents . . . Avant Garde at the Potsdam Public Library is excited to announce an evening of “Unearthing a Story” through drums, electronics, guitars and effects with Claude Aldous, Saturday, July 25. In mid-August, ROUST Records’ Avant Garde brings you three days of improvised and experimental music in three different locations around Potsdam. Every improvised note is a story unearthed in real time. Explore live music both indoors and outdoors on August 15, 16, and 19 at locations listed in the link above.
On August 12, SUNY Potsdam Professor Steven M. Stannish will bring his extensive knowledge of Middle Eastern and Egyptian history to the main space of our library to speak about The Story of Sinuhe, one of Ancient Egypt’s earliest historical novels. Discover the many ways this 3,800-year-old tale was unearthed over time, including on a meter-long limestone fragment.
Experience the world of critters beneath your feet during Decomposers Unleashed! – a show and tell presentation featuring giant millipedes, colorful isopods, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Discover why they even make great pets on August 23!
A family friendly adventure film, Swallows and Amazons, unearths the summertime journey of four children who set sail on a dinghy, camp on an island, and meet their rivals. Stop by on August 23 for this Sunday matinee.
