How to Build a Read-Aloud Routine at Home (Even When You’re Busy)

Reading aloud to your child is a simple and powerful way to support language development, curiosity, and a love of books. But in the chaos of work schedules, school routines, and daily responsibilities, it can be a challenge to build a consistent reading habit.

Here are some practical, low-stress strategies to help you create a read-aloud routine that works for your family.

Start Small and Keep It Consistent

  • You don’t need to spend 30 minutes reading every night.
  • Start with five minutes.
  • Choose one predictable moment of the day and build around that: after breakfast, before bath time, right when you get home, or as a final “wind-down” before bed.

What matters most in building a routine is consistency, not duration.

Let Your Child Choose the Books

  • When children choose their own books (maybe even the  same book again and again) they are more invested in reading time.
  • Re-reading familiar stories strengthens comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

Ask your child: “What should we read tonight?” You may be surprised by their emerging preferences.

Make It Comfortable and Distraction-Free

Choose a spot where you can both relax:

• a cosy chair
• your child’s bed
• a quiet corner of the living room

A designated spot with a blanket or a favourite stuffed animal can create a comforting routine that your child will look forward to.

Use Your Voice

You do not need to “perform” the story but simple variations in tone help children follow plot and emotion:

• Whisper for secrets
• Slow down during suspense
• Pause and point to pictures
• Ask open-ended questions (“Why do you think she’s sad?”)

These small changes make the reading interactive and memorable.

Keep Books Accessible Everywhere

Place baskets or small stacks of books in places where children naturally gather:

• the couch
• the car
• the kitchen table
• bedside tables

Visible books get read more often.
