Battle of the Books 2010

Battle of the Books

A Collaborative Program of the North Country Library System, Watertown, NY

Battle of the Books FAQ

1. What are “Book Battles”?
Book Battle programs are competitions similar to jeopardy or whiz quiz games but questions come from a controlled list of books that participants read in preparation for the matches. Book Battle programs are a great way to get boys to read, but girls enjoy them just as much.

2. How does it work?
Teams are made up of 3-4 students from grades 4-6. The reading levels are very close in these grades and book titles can be added to one list that would be in range and interest of all participants. Team members can be from the same grade or mixed grades, classes, scout troop, home school group, etc. All team members should be active participants and be aware that they are signed up on a team. Once a team has been formed and “officially” registers at the library changes cannot be made.

3. Who makes sure the team members are reading?
A parent or other adult can serve as “team coach”, but it is up to the kids to make sure that they read the books on the list. An adult contact person is required for scheduling purposes, though that person may choose to what extent they wish to act as a coach for the team. A team captain is also necessary for each team. Only one person can give the answers during the actual match. Team members may confer with each other, but it is the captain who gives the answer. Teams may decide to split up the reading lists instead of everyone reading all the titles. It will be very important that all team members show up for all the matches it they choose to do this.

Early Literacy Programming

Library Babies (Saturdays at 11:15 a.m.): Library Babies is an early literacy program for infants (ages 6 mos.-24 mos.) and their caregivers. Attendees participate in a fifteen minute formal program that includes songs, rhymes, finger plays, bounces, and book sharing followed by a play time and parents sharing. Connections made with other families during library babies often turn into lasting friendships for both children and adults. There is a participation limit of fifteen families, so registration is recommended. Call the library at 265-7230.

Toddler Story Time (Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.): Toddler Story Time, for children ages 2-young 3s, is a story program designed for the active nature of the two-year-old. Be prepared to help your child follow the stories, do the fingerplays, and sing the songs. Like Library Babies, the program is followed by playtime and some chat time for adults.

Family Story Time (Saturdays at 10:15 a.m. Ages 2 and up): Join this dedicated group for a weekly story time that sometimes morphs into a group picnic or even a field trip. Expect stories, songs, crafts and lots of friendly conversation. All are welcome!

Early Literacy Story Time (Fridays at 10:30 a.m.) This is a time for preschoolers (ages 3 1/2-5) to have fun with books and have a first 'school' experience. Geared for children preparing for kindergarten, Early Literacy Story Time is based on the American Library Association's early initiative, Every Child Ready to Read. Expect a themed program with picture books, songs and art activities. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children, but may sit on the sidelines while the children sit together in a group.

Outreach

Youth services at the Potsdam Public Library extend outside the library to include partners such as Head Start and the Potsdam Central School District. The library partners with the Potsdam Kiwanis and a variety of local donors to deliver new books monthly to three local Head Start classrooms.
