You must read and agree to the terms below before continuing to use this service.
Use of this service is a privilege.
Failure to comply with these terms will result in the loss of that privilege.
|
Activating this timer constitutes agreement to the
Library's Internet and Computer Use Policy!
- Sign in at the Circulation Desk each time you use the computer.
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the Library at any time.
- Exit from all programs when you are done.
DO NOT TURN OFF THE COMPUTER! If you
turn off or restart this computer for any reason, your privileges
for the remainder of the day will be revoked.
- The visual, verbal or written use of the computer to receive or transmit
harassing material is prohibited. Any misuse of this rule will result
in suspension of the offending user's computer privileges.
- If you wish to save material, download your files to a preformatted
IBM disk. Disks may be purchased for $1 from the Reference Librarian.
Virus-checking software will not protect your computer if you download
programs. If you are concerned about the possibility of computer viruses,
you should install and use virus protection software on your own computer.
The Library is not responsible for damage to personal disks.
- DO NOT modify this computer
or software in any way. No personal compact disks or programs
requiring downloading and installation to the hard drive may be used
on the Library's computers. Earphones must be worn when using multimedia
programs. Use of your own hardware is not allowed, do not attach anything
physically or electronically to Library equipment.
- All applicable laws regarding copyright must be obeyed
- The computer system may not be utilized for commercial purposes: i.e.
the purchase or selling of materials or services.
- Do not display text or graphics that may be defined by State and/or Federal
laws as illegal pornography, obscenity or child pornography.
- Users have the right of confidentiality and the right of privacy.
However, security is technically difficult to achieve and the computer
is located in a public area. Electronic transactions of information
and viewing screens could become public. As a result, the Library cannot guarantee privacy or confidentiality. Remember
to exercise common courtesy. It is rude to look over another's shoulder
to see what he or she is doing on the computer, and it is disturbing
to another's concentration to stand around the computer while waiting
your turn. Remember that people using the Internet after you may see
which sites you have visited.
- Be aware that the connection may fail or
the computer may "freeze"
while you are using it. Such occurrences are unfortunate, but do
not entitle you to go beyond your allotted time if others are waiting.
The computers in the Computer Lab will be unavailable when needed
for training.
- Use of the Internet access computers is on
a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up sheets are available
at the Circulation Desk. You may reserve no more
than a one-hour slot
for the current day only. (Two hours for word processing). Access
to the computer is by both reservation and "walk-on." It is your
responsibility to give up the computer after one hour. Staff may
make an exception to the time limit when demand is light or heavy.
Children under the age of seven are not allowed to use the computer
without the supervision of an adult (over 18 years of age), who
is validated to use the Library computer.
- Users under the age of 18 must have a Computer
Use Agreement Form signed by a parent or legal guardian. We ask
that parents and guardians read
"Rules For Computer Use" before giving permission. Agreement forms
are available from the Circulation Desk in the main Library. Two
validated users may use the computer together upon the approval of
the staff member at the Circulation Desk.
- The Potsdam Public Library allows patrons to access their personal
E-Mail accounts. World Wide Web accounts like Hotmail and Yahoo are
accessible on all of the Internet Ready computers. The program Outlook
Express is only available on certain machines and if you need Outlook
Express to access your E-Mail please inform a staff member at the
Circulation Desk. You may not send E-Mail from the Library's account,
nor receive E-Mail at that account. If you would like to set up an
E-Mail account ask the Reference Librarian for a list of free E-Mail
sites.
- Printing is charged at 15 cents per page
with paper provided by the Library. All printing is sent to a central printer in the main computer department.
You must pick up your copies and pay at the Circulation Desk.
- You may not always be able to access the sites on the Internet that you
are trying to visit. There may be too many Internet visitors and the
host computer may have closed or have limited access. The database
or resource may be licensed to a particular institution. The host
computer may have changed its address or closed down. The Library's
Internet connection may be periodically and temporarily inoperable
due to technical difficulties.
- Misuse of the computers or Internet access will result in loss of
your Internet privileges. Your use of the computer should not infringe
upon the rights of others.
