Online Databases

  Please call the Potsdam Public Library at (315)265-7230 for your username
and password. This is required in order to access some of the databases.


These databases are provided by the New York State Library's EmpireLink Project through an LSTA grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, the NCLS central library grant, and the Northern New York Library Network's Regional Bibliographic Database grant.


Downloadable eBooks, Audiobooks and Magazines

This page has all of the downloadable eBooks, Audiobooks, talking picture books and magazines together to make it easier for you to choose. TumbleBooks, Overdrive downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks as well as Zinio Magazines have all moved to this new page.


Ancestry Library Edition brings the world’s most popular consumer online genealogy resource to the Potsdam Public Library. An online collection of individuals from North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and more. Ancestry.com is only available in the Library, using the Library's internet connection, not from home.

There are more than 7,000 available databases with sources like censuses, vital records, immigration records, family histories, military records, court and legal documents, photos, maps, and more. This includes ongoing updates and new content that is being added all of the time.

Popular and recently added collections include:
U.S. collections deliver hundreds of millions of names from sources such as federal and U.S. censuses; birth, death, and marriage records including the Social Security Death Index; and U.S. border crossing and trans-ocean ship records.

Canadian collections provide nearly 60 million records from the Census of Canada, and key vital records, such as the Drouin Collection (1621-1967), which includes nearly 30 million baptism, marriage, and burial records from Quebec.

Military collections deliver over 150 million records containing information often not found elsewhere and includes records from the colonial to the Vietnam era.

Ancestry.com is only available in the Library, using the Library's internet connection, not from home.

New York Heritage digital collections

New York Heritage is a project of the NY 3Rs Association, Inc. New York Heritage is a research portal for students, educators, historians, genealogists, and anyone else who is interested in learning more about the people, places and institutions of New York State. The site provides free access to more than 170 distinct digital collections, totalling hundreds of thousands of items.

Ebsco Primary Search including the Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, Watertown Daily Times newspapers, Wilson Web with full text of thousands of leading publications, the Grolier Encyclopedia and more can be found online at the North Country Library System. This is a great source with all of the websites in one place to help you find the information that you need. You log in using your library card number and pin number at the top of this page.


Northern NY Historical Newspapers

The Northern New York Library Network is providing access to a growing database featuring Historical Newspapers from around Northern NY that can be searched online. The newspapers are from several locations through out the seven counties that the Northern NY Library Network covers. You don't need to call the Library for access to this database; a user name and password are not required.

Education Portal is a member of the Association of College and Research Libraries that provides higher education and career planning resources for teens and college students. The videos feature advice from real world college and career counselors who have graciously volunteered their time for this project. The informational videos cover college admissions, college counseling and they have a large list of university reviews to help you make an informed decision.

Adults looking for employment or a career change. Education Portal, which is a member of the American Library Association, offers videos for adults seeking employment. The videos feature advice from real world career counselors who have volunteered their time to help you find a career. The videos cover how to make a resume', job interviewing and how to utilize job networking to your advantage. If your not sure what to look for try the videos on researching careers.

  Online master's degrees. Like any advanced degree, an online master's requires a great deal of forethought and drive. Here you'll find everything you need to identify a reputable program, succeed in the program and then land a career that makes the most of your education.

  Online College Database OnlineCollegesDatabase.org strives to provide helpful information about colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools at the local city and state level. Their research indicates that prospective students of the internet age desire clear and accurate information, displayed in a friendly and easy to use interface. They have created data sets, graphs, and Google Maps to help achieve this goal.

  Zen College Life is the leading source for college and degree information online. Our goal is to provide the latest information and references to people searching for online schools, degrees and colleges.

  Free Language Courses The FSI (Foreign Service Institute) language courses are arguably the best free language courses available anywhere. The FSI language courses cover over 40 languages from the most spoken in the world to some less well known ones. Some of the language learning material is a bit dated, but it is still possible for someone to learn a huge amount from this material.
